Who we are
KnowLDN ("we", "us") is a study app for the London taxi Knowledge. We're responsible for the personal data described here. Contact us about anything in this policy at hello@knowldn.co.uk.
Using KnowLDN without an account
You can use KnowLDN without signing up. Your progress, your theme choice and which tips you've closed are saved in your browser's local storage on your own device. They aren't sent to us. Clearing your browser data removes them.
What we collect if you create an account
- Account details: your email address and, if you give it, your name. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name and email address from Google. We don't receive your Google password.
- Study progress: which steps you've completed on each run and your best call-over grade, so you can carry on from any device.
- Settings: your theme, and whether you've asked for launch emails.
- Points collection: which points you've marked as collected, any notes you write about them, the pointing lists you make, and any runs of your own you create.
- Looking up points: when you open a point's page or see a point's photo in training, your browser asks Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons (run by the Wikimedia Foundation) for information and photos about that place, so they see your IP address and which place it is, as with any website. We don't send them anything about you.
- Appearance records: if you choose to log your appearances, the dates, stages, scores, questions and notes you enter. Only you can see them.
- Messages you send us: if you email us, we keep your message and email address so we can reply.
We don't use advertising cookies, and we don't sell or share your data for marketing. We only use analytics cookies if you agree to them (see below).
Analytics cookies, only if you agree
When you first visit, we ask whether we can use Google Analytics. If you say no, or don't answer, nothing from Google Analytics loads and no analytics cookies are set.
If you say yes, Google Analytics sets cookies (named _ga and _ga_…, lasting up to two years) to count visits and tell new visitors from returning ones. It records which pages you view, how you got here (for example a Google search), and your device, browser and rough location (country or city). We use this to see which parts of KnowLDN are used and to improve them. We've turned off Google's advertising features and Google signals, and we don't send Google your name, email or account. Google doesn't store your full IP address.
We rely on your consent for this. You can change your mind at any time from Cookie settings at the bottom of every page (or in Settings when signed in): saying no stops it and removes its cookies. Analytics data is kept for 14 months.
Why we use it
- To provide your account and save your progress. This is needed to provide the service you've asked for.
- To send launch emails, only if you opt in. We rely on your consent, and you can turn them off at any time on your account page.
- To see how KnowLDN is used, only if you agree to analytics cookies. We rely on your consent, which you can withdraw from Cookie settings.
- To keep the service secure and reply to messages. This is in our legitimate interests.
Who processes it for us
We use a small number of trusted providers to run KnowLDN:
- Google Firebase for sign-in, our database and hosting. Your progress and settings are stored in Google's London data centre. Sign-in is handled by Google and may involve servers outside the UK, under safeguards approved for international transfers.
- Google Analytics, only if you agree to analytics cookies. Google processes this data for us and may do so in the United States, under safeguards approved for international transfers.
- Google Fonts and jsDelivr serve the fonts the site uses. Like any website request, they see your IP address when your browser downloads a font.
Map data comes from OpenStreetMap and is served from our own hosting, so viewing maps doesn't share anything with OpenStreetMap.
How long we keep it
We keep your account data until you delete your account. You can do that yourself at any time from your account page, which permanently removes your progress, settings and sign-in account. Emails you send us are kept only as long as needed to deal with them.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of your data
- correct it
- delete it
- restrict or object to how we use it
- move it to another service
You can also withdraw consent for emails at any time. To use any of these rights, email hello@knowldn.co.uk. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
KnowLDN is for people preparing for the Knowledge, which you can apply for from age 18. It isn't intended for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we use your data, we'll update this page and the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll let account holders know.
